Today is the 31st anniversary of Tom and I’s first date. Today I am sharing something I wrote for the book I’ve been writing about our journey. I started the book back in 2020. My plan now is to take all of the writing I’ve done about us and turn it into a book of essays, poems, letters, and stories.

1991; the beginning

Tom and I met in the fall of 1991 when I was managing a Wendy’s restaurant in Enid. He was a customer that we had nicknamed “Double Cheese” because he always ordered a double cheeseburger.

I was a single mom (newly divorced).  He and I had flirted with each other a little bit and I eventually asked him if he was married. He wasn’t and I asked him out. I was going out with a friend to some bars the next night and asked him if he’d meet us.

He said he would try but never showed up. But then the next day, he showed up at the drive-thru window and we made plans to go out on Sunday night. On Sunday afternoon, he called and we were talking about what to do and decided on bowling so we could talk and get to know each other.

I told him that he needed to know that I had two children so if he didn’t like children; there was no point in even going on one date. We had that date and the rest is history J. I knew it was meant to be when he called me a couple of days later and wanted to do something together and as we were talking, we both said “It’s Quantum Leap” night at the same time.

You made such a perfect match and he was instantly Dad. So loved and he returned that love in a special way. His outlook was so unusual and special.
