As I try to get back on track with writing, Thankful Thursday seems an appropriate place to start.

Something I constantly remind myself of is that there is always something to be thankful for. Always. Life can be challenging, but if you seek out ways to be thankful, it helps a lot.

One thing I am thankful for is finding the book “What to say when you talk to yourself” by Shad Helmstetter. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but it really was life changing for me. The things we say to ourselves really do matter.

Recently, I did a 30 day devotional on the power of our words and it helped reinforce these messages for me.

Consider the paragraph from below about talking to plants. Wow, I mean just wow! Yelling at plants kills them. If you speak to them lovingly, they flourish. So when I say that I am a plant killer as soon as someone gives me a plant, that plants destiny is already sealed. What if I said positive things about and to the plant?

I have the perfect chance to try that right now. My friend gave me a knockout rose plant for my birthday. My first thought was “Oh good, a plant for me to kill”. But I dug a hole and I planted it in my front yard. I’m going to go out and speak loving words to the plant and speak life into the plant. What’s the worst that could happen?

This even applies to the recent issue with the doctor. If I constantly focus on how upset and angry I am, that brings more upset and anger into my life. If I focus on forgiving and moving forward, it brings me peace. I want peace.

As you go throughout today, think about the things you say to yourself. Are they words of life or are they words of death (negativity, self-pity, self-loathing) or are they words of life? Look for the little rays of sunshine throughout your day and focus on those.

With a new month, I am challenging myself to post daily on the blog this month. I am aware it is the second day of the month. But yesterday morning did not go as planned and rather than beating myself up about it or saying “well, I didn’t start on the 1st, so forget it”, I am choosing to start today.

Happy Thursday! What are you thankful for today? What are the messages you tell yourself throughout your day?
